Breast Self-examination (BSE)
Breast Self-Exam Technique Take your time when examining your breasts. Proper examination should take a few minutes with each breast. Press firmly while making small circular motions, using the flat portions of the middle three fingers of your left hand, to feel for lumps in the right breast. Without removing your hand completely from the breast, move around the breast in a circular, up and down line, or wedge pattern while repeating the pressing maneuver until you have examined the entire breast. Use the same technique each time you examine your breasts so that you will become confident in what you are feeling and you will be able to detect changes. Examine your left breast with your right hand using the above technique. It is a good idea to repeat the examination of both breasts while standing in the shower with the breasts wet and soapy. Alternate examining hands with the arm, of the same side of the breast to be examined, behind the head. The upright position makes it easier to check the upper and outer parts of the breasts (toward your armpit) Lastly, step out of the shower and take a good look at your breasts in a mirror. Look for any dimpling of the skin, changes in the nipple, redness, or swelling. Make an appointment with your doctor promptly if you find any suspicious changes in your breasts.
